Young and older women from all over the world have gathered for the annual sisters’ conference in March. Three of them are Imma (18), Grytsje (51), and Riekie (82) from the Netherlands. A daughter, mother, and grandmother sit together at a table in the conference center. Grytsje brings her daughter a cup of tea, and Imma shows \u201cBeppe\u201d\u2014as she calls her grandmother\u2014pictures from the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s really nice,” Imma says when I ask her what she thinks of the conference. As <\/a>a teenager<\/a>, she also often goes to BUK camp<\/a>, and I ask her what the difference is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The vibe is a little different,” she says with a laugh. “At a camp, it’s often totally chaotic, but also a lot of fun with tons of energy.” Things are calmer now, with more breathing room in the schedule, but just as much fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yeah, vibe!” says Grandma Riekie. “That’s the kind of word I have to look up in the dictionary first.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We all laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linnea Riksfjord sang \u201cLay hold of life everlasting\u201d from the Ways of the Lord <\/i>songbook.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In the hall, the participants listened attentively.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Cornelia Bols\u00f8nes and Karina Bernhardsen Opitz sang “The way to heaven” from Ways of the Lord.<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

And, of course, everyone had to join in singing: \u201cForever and Ever\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

During the entertaining part of the evening, there was plenty of laughter and applause.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Rebekka from the “Svartskog church” shared her thoughts on marriage.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

There was a wide variety of recreational activities.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"
In addition to cardio and strength training, participants could also choose between yoga, Zumba, or line dancing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The singers gave it their all during the karaoke night.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"
A great atmosphere at “Paint ‘n Sip” …<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"
… which probably ended up being more like “Paint\u2019n Chat.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"
Between the different parts of the program, the women had time for good chats and fellowship.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"
More than 5,000 girls and women from all over the world had traveled to the sisters’ conference.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

“Eternal life begins right here”<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I can tell that Grandma keeps up with the times when she pulls out her phone to look up her notes from the night before in her digital notebook. This year\u2019s theme, taken from 1 Timothy 6:12, is: “Lay hold of eternal life.”<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Riekie, this isn\u2019t about something that happens only in heaven. \u201cIt starts here,\u201d she says. \u201cGod has placed eternity in the human heart,\u201d as it says in Ecclesiastes. We are, therefore, by nature, drawn to eternity. And we can attain eternal life right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples for one another<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imma laughs when I ask if she sees any of herself in her mother. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I look a lot like her, but I think that’s a good thing, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I like about my mom is that she really cares about others. I\u2019d like to learn more about that too,” she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

“You see how Mom and Grandma live\u2014how they treat others\u2014and that they have been faithful. It’s always nice to be with them, because you feel like you can be completely yourself around them.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>

Grytsje also sees her mother as an important example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Mom is caring and observant,” she says. “For example, she pays attention to what conversations are about and how she talks about others.” It gives me a great sense of security, and I\u2019d like to pass that on to the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living with a sense of eternity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to Grytsje, it is important to hold on to the longing for eternal life in our daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Sometimes things happen around you that you don’t understand,” she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It can take over your thoughts and distract you from eternal life. It is precisely in situations like these that you can turn to God and ask: ‘What do you want to show me in this?'”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

It helps her to hold on to a verse from the Bible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If you turn to God\u2019s word and hold fast to it, you won\u2019t be dragged down by such thoughts, but you\u2019ll somehow become free from the situation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Loving God and living according to His word then becomes the most important thing, and earthly things pale in comparison. You sense that God is near and in control of everything, and this gives you confidence that His word is true and that He gives you strength in every situation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only by God\u2019s great grace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Grandma Riekie looks back on many years of living with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When I was in my twenties, I decided to walk on this path,” she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n
\n

“Over the years, there have been some wonderful moments, but also some sad and stressful ones. And in every situation, time and again, I received exactly the help I needed from God\u2019s word. That connection with heaven is growing ever stronger. You wouldn’t want any other life. It is such a special thing to belong to Jesus and share in His life.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Riekie is grateful that all five of her daughters can attend the conferences, as well as many of her grandchildren.<\/p>\n<\/div>

“It\u2019s wonderful to see that future generations will also embrace eternal life,” she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But that\u2019s not because we as parents have done such a great job. It’s God\u2019s great mercy.” She encourages her daughter and granddaughter to hold on to what they have been given. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Never give up,” she says. “Yes, hang in there\u2014it’s totally worth it!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
